Malcolm, The guestbook has gone very quiet and nobody is answering your question, not sure if anybody remembers Rimpton Court or not. I certainly remember it well, in fact my next door neighbour George Tolhurst was the head gardener ther for all his working life so probably there when you were, and my father who was a butcher in St Pteres at the time delivered meat and sausages there several times a week,I used to go with im on the rounds sometime and always remember the grey uniforms you all wore at the home. Can be of no further help

Here is a coincidence, my neighbour who used to live in St. Peters, knew the couple who owned Bleak House. Small world, eh! The husband died and his wife sold it. Can someone tell if it a private residence now or made into a hotel?

Stuart's comments
Bleak House is now a private house and no longer open to the public. See my comments on the Dickens Festival page. |

Walkers bakery was fabulous.I started work at The Thanet Foundry and Engineering Company in Albion Road. As the "new boy" it was my job to collect orders from the workforce on a daily basis and pop up to the bakery just before ten o'clock to buy the cakes and rolls. My favourite was their custard tarts which went down particularly well with the morning cuppa. Also in Sowell Street was a small general store run by a Mr Rogers, and I remember taking my mothers weekly order, written out in a small red notebook, and it would be delivered on the Wednesday afternoon. The order was always the same - butter, sugar, tea, coffee, a few tins and some fresh veg. Excellent service though as each customer was known personally by Mr Rogers.

Mollie, Yes I remember Walkers shop on The Roundabout at St Peters very well, it was next to Hopes the little school clothing shop that seemed to sell everything, and opposite was Hazells the Butcher. I don't think they owned a bakery in Whitfield Ave, but certainly they had a small shop up there that sold most food items, they also had a small bakery shop in Sowell street at one time. Next to the electricians that was owned by Mr Bowyer he was Arthurs father who was the Harbourmaster at Broadstairs for many years. I also remember Jean Walker, think the business was run by her parents

To Mollie, Yes i remember Walkers bakery. There was a roundabout there then. For years after it had gone, i still used to ask the bus conductor for a "single to St. Peters Roundabout please" I believe the Walkers also owned the bakery in Whitfield avenue but i'm not certain.

Hmmm, Broadstairs. Memories, 1968 Stone House Prep, Mr Windsor, cane and paddle specialist ( no sense of humour ), broken thumbs from goalkeeping on frigid pitch, scuffed and scraped knees from " rugger" tackles on same frigid pitch. 1970 I think, Hildersham House after Stone House closed, ( it closed shortly after!) St Peter's Church and fascinating graveyard, trips to the beach in wellies and dungaress, freezing. Callard and Bowsers toffees, ten shillings a term pocket money, trips to Margate pier for knickerbockerglorys with my older brother Tim every second weekend or so. How come Broadstairs looks so pretty now? Guess I never got to appreciate it, and Australia was a lot warmer. either way, it looks fabulous and I will have to return on my next trip.

I lived in Broadstairs on Wrotham Road from 1944 until 1948. What great memories. Good to read the messages from those who also lived there when they were growing up. I have the sames memories. but some I forget, good to read the someone else. Does anyone remember the bakery in St. Peter run by the Walkers? Jean Walker was my friend.
